Eye Care | 25 Tips for eye precaution


Eyes are vital organs of body connecting you to immediate environment.  Here is a list of precautions and life-style modifications that could help protect your eyes and improve your eye sight:

1). Add food  abundant  in nutrients such as Vitamin C and Vitamin E, , zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, lutein and zeaxanthin to reduce occurrences of  eye problems such as muscular degeneration and cataract. These include food items such as green leafy vegetables, bell peppers, broccoli, brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes, oranges, citrus foods, salmon, oily fish, eggs, nuts, beans and carrots (high in beta carotenes).

2). Quit smoking to prevent diseases such as cataract, muscular degeneration and optic nerve damage.

3). Ensure that your glasses or contact lens prescription is up-to-date for eye defects such as myopia (nearsightedness), hypermetropia (farsightedness), presbyopia (diminished ability to focus on near objects), astigmatism (blurred vision) and adequate for computer use.

4). Avoid continual use of contact lenses for more than 19 hours duration.

5). Avoid wearing contact-lens while swimming.

6). Wear protective sunglasses to protect your eyes from sun’s ultraviolet rays. Exposure to UV rays is been linked to eye deformities such as cataracts, macular degeneration, pingueculae (degeneration of conjunctiva and pterygia (Surfer's Eye).

7). Using polarized glasses protects your eyes while driving.

8). Use protective anti-glare computer screen while working on computer for longer durations. 

 9). Look away from computer screen intermittently every 20 minutes;  take periodic rest for your eyes by looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Take a 15 minutes break every two hours from your work routine to relax your eyes.

10). Follow ergonomics such as choosing a comfortable, supportive chair; sitting in a posture such that your feet are flat on the floor while sitting on your desk. These cautions prevent Blurry vision, Dry eyes, Eyestrain, Headaches, Neck, shoulder and back pain.

11). Wear protective eye gear during sports and adventure activities such as ice-hockey, river rafting.

12). Consult your physicians for right set of eye exercises for your eyes.

13). Use allergen reducing eye-drops with restraint during the allergy season. These eye-drops functions by constricting cornea to reduce oxygen flow to cornea. As such this can potentially increase the instances or eye redness instead of prevention.

13). Carefully read the labels of eye drops to check whether eye- drops can be used while wearing contacts.

14). Placing cold-chilled cucumber slices on your eyelids for 10 minutes can effectively reduce excursion and puffiness on your eyelids.

15). Alternatively soak  green tea bag in cold water for some time and then place them on eye-lids for 15-20 minutes.  Tannins present in green tea bags reduce puffiness of eyes.

16). Do not read in dim light conditions to prevent eye-strain. When tired take break to refresh and start fresh after the break. Also do not focus on sun or any other source of bright light directly.

17). Take caution not to rub your eyes for longer duration.

18). Follow up your eye health regularly with annual eye check up with eye specialist for power prescription details, dry eyes, diabetic retinopathy, problems in retina and glaucoma.

19). Mix a table spoon of honey in a table spoon of almond oil.  Gently scrub and clean the eyelids with the mixture using clean cotton. Repeat for one week to reduce dark patches under eyes.

20). Soak five almonds overnight, peel the skin of the soaked almonds and eat during morning hours. For about 3 weeks. This would help in improving your eye-sight.

21). Splashing normal or chilled water on your face and eyes during breaks in office hours keeps you refreshed and provides instant refreshment.

22). Funnel seeds can be boiled, cooled and there after used as an eye wash to cure pink eyes.

23). Aloe Vera Juice can be applied with clean cotton or clean piece of cloth to clean eye.

24). Placing a drop of castor oil in the affected eye or washing eyes three times a day cures the pink eye disease.

25).  Mixture of one table spoon of diluted boric acid boiled in a quart of water is used as an eye wash to cure the pink eye. It can be applied by soaking the solution in a gauze (filter) piece and then placing it on the eyes.  Eyes are then washed thereafter.
