Description of the fruit “Avocado”

Avocado is an evergreen fruit tree of the flowering plant family Lauraceae and was originally called “ahuacati” by Aztecs of ancient Mexico. It is mostly cultivated in tropical climates and temperate climates such as in California. California ranks the highest in production of avocado fruit where there are more than eight different varieties grown. Among which Has avocados are the most common one. Initially many people believed that avocados are green vegetables but they are indeed fruits with large amount of health benefits associated due to its nutritional content.

Avocados are rich source of vitamins, fibre, protein, and good fat content that plays important role in controlling number of ailments such as it reduces the risk of arthritis, diabetes, stroke and coronary artery disease, helps in lowering cholesterol level, promote healthy body weight and helps in preventing the development of certain types of cancer.

Lowers cholesterol level – The fat content present in avocados are mono saturated fats which are healthy fats for our body because they help in lowering the bad cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) and increase the good cholesterol (HDL cholesterol) in body. Therefore it reduces the risk of heart stroke and heart diseases. It is also rich in phytosterols, polyhydroxylated fatty acids alcohols (PFAs) which has strong anti-inflammatory and therefore plays vital role in treatment of arthritis.

Helps digestion – Avocados are excellent source of soluble and insoluble fibre. Insoluble fibre aids in proper digestion and bowel movement whereas soluble fibre increases the appetite. The rich fibre content thus helps in proper digestion, regulates blood sugar and helps in maintaining proper body weight.
