Harmful effect of tobacco on health

There are several reasons for one to understand why you need to quit smoking? Even the cigarette packets warns saying “Smoking is dangerous to health”.  Smoking is so harmful that it affect each and every part of human body causing number of illness and diseases. Knowing the serious health risks associated with tobacco and smoking, may enlightened you and motivate to quit if you are one of them. So let’s have a look and understand deeply how this bad habits ruins our health and can cause serious health issues that can lead to death.

Tobacco

Tobacco is a plant (genus Nicotiana) which belongs to the family of Solanaceae. There are number of species, but the most commercial crop is N.tabacum and the most potent, widely being used is N.rustica. The leaves of tobacco plant are dried and used in cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco and flavoured tobacco. They are also consumed as snuff, chewing tobacco and dipping tobacco. Tobacco contains the most potent drug known as nicotine, which stimulates the same areas of brain as cocaine and amphetamines, releasing adrenaline which gives the buzz of pleasure and energy. This feeling makes the person addictive to this nicotine drug.

Nicotine is one of the most heavily addictive drugs in the United States and the most leading preventable cause of disease, disability and death in America. Cigarette smoking accounts for almost 90% of lung cancer in the U.S and around 38,000 deaths per year.

Health risk due to smoking of tobacco

Tobacco smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals, each of with affect some or other part of body causing mild to serious health issues. Some of the major health risk associate with tobacco smoking are:

Heart and blood vessel problems – such as blood clots in brain, in legs and in lungs. Coronary artery disease including angina and heart attacks. High blood pressure, infertility and problems in erections due to decreases blood flow.

Atherosclerosis is also observed which is a diseases characterized by formation of waxy substance called plaque that builds in arteries.

Aneurysms can be also another symptoms of excessive smoking which results in bulging of blood vessels that can burst and cause death.

Cancer occurs rapidly in regular smokers, especially in lungs, mouth, larynx, esophagus, bladder, kidney, pancreases and cervix. There is increased risk of mouth and nasal cancer more compared to other parts of body.

Lung problems such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, tuberculosis and in some people it lead to asthma.

Problems during pregnancy such as premature labor, miscarriage and low birth weight of babies.

Cataract formation and loss of sight due to increases risk of macular degeneration is also observed in some cases which can lead to complete blindness if kept untreated.

It is also observed that early smoking in women can lead to osteoporosis and weakening of bones.

Tooth, cavities and gum diseases are common among regular smokers.

Wrinkling of skin is also observed in some people.

And the main health effect of smoking is that it decreases the overall immunity of human body making it susceptible to number of diseases mainly cancers. So if you observe, smoking is so dangerous that it affect each and every part of human body making it weak and prone to various illness. Hence it is a right time to quit smoking, if you are one of the smokers to avoid further health complication and even dangerous effects like death.
