Gardening: Gardening is a very good hobby of growing and cultivating plants in your home surrounding or backyards. Studies have shown that presence of surrounding garden has positive affect on human health by lowering its stress level. Gardening involve growing of one type of plant or large number of different type of plants in mixed planting. Mostly ornamentals plants and flowering plants are grown in gardens. Some people plant useful plants like root vegetables, leafy vegetables, herbs or medicinal plants. Planting can bed one outside the house in yards, lawns or inside the house in small pots which is known as Indoor gardening. Indoor gardening is mainly done to create air cooling and for purifying effect. Water gardening is concerned with growing plants adapted to pools and ponds. They require special conditions and care.Some people get involved in community gardening where area of land is gardened by group of people as a social activity for providing fresh air to community.

How gardening helps to reduce stress

During our everyday lives, we are constantly exposed to stress. Example of stress reaction are increased blood pressure, increased muscle tension, increased heart rate, reduced gastrointestinal function, increased sweat gland production and  increased adrenalin and cortisol. Stress reactions can be reduced in many ways such as morning walk, workout in gym, playing games, playing with your kids or pets and even by spending some time in your garden. Researchers have shown that physical environment affect us both positively and negatively. Studies have proved that humans respond positively to natural environment whereas art facts such as houses and streets does not provoke same reactions.

Benefits of gardening

Exposure to sunlight and fresh air – When you are exposed to fresh air, you breath fresh oxygen which helps you to feel better because high level of oxygen increases almost all reactions in the body. Fresh air thus help you to feel energized and help you to sleep better at night. Similarly early sunlight exposure in morning gives you vitamin D.  Vitamin D is essential for bone formation and deficiency of it result in many bone related problems like osteoporosis and osteomalacia. Getting enough vitamin D can also reduce risk of other disease, including multiple sclerosis, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and heart disease. Studies have shown that simple spending time in garden can lower your blood pressure.

Getting in touch with nature – When you come in contact with nature you feel better because activities like bird singing, waterfalls, blowing of wind etc. relives your stress level. You can make your garden as a place for meditation, yoga which will give you more peace and relaxation than a closed room.

Grow valuable plants– You can grow plants that are rich in vitamins, calcium, and magnesium such as cauliflower, sweet potatoes, spinach, broccoli etc. Try to grow your natural’s herbs, medicinal plants in your outdoor or indoor gardens.

Garden promotes exercise– Simple activities like digging of soil, cleaning, planting,walking in garden result in good amount of exercise to body and mind making you feel relaxed and stress free that increases your appetite and makes you sleep better.

Overall to conclude gardening can have positive effect on mental, physical and emotional level of an individual hence it is very good idea to have your own garden at your doorstep.
